Reasons to Use Safe Life Oregon
Travel, new medication, military deployment, family changes, legal concerns, evacuation due to wildfire or a difficult period can affect your firearm storage needs.
Safe Life Oregon connects firearm owners with trusted partners who provide voluntary, temporary storage
Everyday Reasons for Temporary Storage
Temporary storage can provide added security when:
- Children or grandchildren are visiting
- You are traveling or leaving your home for an extended period
- You are preparing for a wildfire, evacuation, or other emergency
- You are moving, separating, or going through a divorce
- You are being deployed or temporarily relocating
- You simply want another secure storage option
You do not need to be experiencing a crisis to use Safe Life.
Creating Time and Distance During Difficult Times
Major life changes can affect anyone. The death of someone close, relationship challenges, job loss, financial strain, chronic pain, a new health diagnosis, or starting a medication can increase emotional distress.
Voluntarily storing firearms outside the home can create time, distance, and an added layer of safety while you or someone you care about moves through a difficult period. It is a practical, temporary step—not a judgment and not a permanent decision
Firearm Suicide Prevention Matters
Firearms are involved in:
- 55% of youth suicide deaths in Oregon; when a firearm is used, it belongs to a family member approximately 80% of the time
- 72% of veteran suicide deaths in Oregon
- 55% of civilian suicide deaths in Oregon
Creating time and distance from a firearm during a period of increased risk can provide an opportunity for the crisis to pass and for support to begin.
There is hope
Most people who survive a suicide attempt do not later die by suicide. A person experiencing a suicidal crisis may not truly want their life to end—they may desperately want overwhelming emotional pain to stop.
With time, connection, and the right support, people can and do move through these moments. Temporary firearm storage can help protect that possibility.

About Us
Safe Life Oregon is a community-based program of the Oregon Firearm Safety Coalition. We bring together firearm retailers and trusted partners committed to providing voluntary, temporary firearm storage and practical suicide prevention resources. The program is supported by researchers, veteran consultants, VA coordinators, and a multidisciplinary advisory board.
Get Trained
Firearm training is one of the best ways to protect yourself, your family, and your rights. Training helps firearm owners develop the skills and judgment needed to safely handle firearms, understand the law, store firearms properly, and make good decisions under stress. Responsible firearm ownership starts with education and practice.
